Number the stars assignment 2
Bruce HuangIn number the stars, Annemarie undergoes many things that force her to mature faster, which is a result of having a major war in her lifetime. The differences between Annemarie’s story and Little red Riding Hoods are numerous, but the similarities are more unexpected, at least in my opinion, and always have to do with the protagonist and the antagonist.
In fairy tales, you might notice that the bad guy always loses, which is pretty much the same in every fairy tale, because fairy tales are based around the telling of a moral, but with wars, both sides lose so much ethically that there’s really no winner in a real war. Both sides must suffer from the losses of war in both physical form and more mental and emotional forms.
In fairy tales, the point/moral/reason for telling this story is always very obvious (the wolf is bad, and the three little pigs beat him because they were “good guys”) but in wars, the point is never as obvious as “this side won because they were good guys”. Only after 50 years did we fully understand world war 2, and even now, there are still people who support the supposed “Aryan” race.
Fairy tales always seem to be forced, such as the situation with the three little pigs, who were forced to build a house, which almost ended in all three of the pigs demise, but with wars, they are more optional, as wars are normally started by something wrong with a government or a revolt or something like that. The people behind those things think it’s right and they should be doing it, but in truth, they are wrong, and I think by the time they realize that the mistake has already been made.
In Annemarie’s story, there is also an antagonist as well as a protagonist, just like the story of little red riding hood, but the “sides” are much larger. With Annemarie’s story, all of the Jews and the Americans as well as the russians face the large enemy of the Nazi’s. Fairy tales normally have smaller sides to the battle.
In both fairy tales and wars the stories are always biased towards the side the tellers are on. Because of this, the apparently good side always wins, depending on which story you are reading. With fairy tales though, it always only tells the side of the good guy, not the bad guy.
In conclusion, there are many more differences between a fairy tale and a war than similarities, because Annemarie’s story was not similar to Little red Riding Hood’s at all in my opinion.
